Comets Hole

Comet’s Hole is located centrally in the lagoon between Erscott’s Hole and the western end of the airstrip. The reef at Comet’s Hole is significantly different to the coral communities found adjacent to the western reef edge and much of this difference is due to the influence of a fresh water spring located at the base of the hole.

Snorkelers are always amazed at the incredible variety of marine life found in this deep coral hole, species often observed at this location include massive Black Stingrays (Dasyatis thetidis), Painted Morwong (Cheilodactylus ephippium), Silver Trevally (Pseudocaranx dentex), Spangled Emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus), Butterfly Cod (Pterois volitans), McCulloch’s Anemonefish (Amphiprion mccullochi), and numerous species of Angelfish (Chaetodon sp.). One of the more exciting aspects of a snorkel at Comet’s Hole, especially during the summer months, is to observe small Galapagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis), which often reside in the hole for an extended period of time.
